The Persistence of Queer Music
Singer Aziz releases songs that speak to the commonalities between refugees and Roma people, but also Balkan people. Music is one of the important sites where this is done in particular because post Ottoman racism hasn't been able to erase what I like to call queer theories. In Bulgaria, listening to chalga music for instance was considered during the communist period, almost illegal in the sense that this was considered shunned or kitsch. And so how queer people and trans people take up this music and deploy it towards new forms of solidarity and togetherness is very important and very interesting, I think.
