Can Violence Really Be Accurately Measurable?

The further back in time we go, the less reliable becomes any kind of evidence or data. We don't even know how many people accurately have died as a consequence of that ten year long war. The other problem is we don't have any accurate, really accurate figures of our total populations until quite late in the day. So with all of that in minde, how can you be sure, for example, or perhaps not?
