J w. Mercer, assistant surgeon of the forty seventh massachusetts, examined 400 runaway slaves in baton, rouge in the summer of 18 63. This slave, gordon, later became a corporal in the union army. The idea was to inflict, or like, land the whip broadside against the skin and create these large whelps and break the skin. But the whip that we were using for a completely different purpose was just to create sonic shock waves. So there's two whips. They're used in different ways.
