Dave Daven: When we refer a patient to an ophthalmologist, what do they do differently in their exam from what we do in the office for conjunctivitis? I think that there's very limited difference. You certainly can't see follicles without a slit lamp, but I think you can do a pretty good exam for these cases without too much equipment. He says patients with atypical symptoms or failure to respond to antibiotic therapy should go through multiple courses of treatment and be seen by an ocular specialist.
