Kome's reaction to the intrusion of the West is, frankly, fascinating. More or less from the jump, he was unswervingly anti-foreign. The most consistent political thread in his ideology was a desire to restore the 200-year-old Sakoku or closed-country policy. And what I personally find very intriguing about this is that so far as I can tell, Kome never met a single foreigner in his entire life.
