Right after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the hijab wasn't mandatory. By 1981, a law required women to wear the hijab. And it was about more than just enforcing a dress code. It was about control. If you don't wear a hijab, you could lose your job. You could be denied an education or refuse service in a shop.
