The History of the Declaration of Independence
The Declaration almost had a section that denounced the practice of slavery, but it was removed. Thomas Jefferson who chaired the committee was a slaveholder; John Adams never owned slaves. Benjamin Franklin had been a slave owner in earlier in the 18th century and later became committed to abolition.
