The Consciousness of Language Models

This is very interesting to me for multiple reasons, but perhaps the most relevant here is this series of questions I kind of gestured at earlier. What does that say about their sentience? What does it say about their consciousness? Famously, like Le Mans kind of left Google after, or was kicked out of Google after saying that their Lambda chatbot system was sentient. And so what really interests me about your work on consciousness and its relationship to self-consciousness here is I do think that ordinarily there is a lot of this failure of imagination to think about a kind of consciousness that might not necessarily involve that awareness of self.
