Cities in Mesopotamia
In ancient mesopotamia, as perhaps to day, there was a sense that cities were where things happened. But on top of that, cities are products of social organization and above all, political structures. The state, the apparatus that these elites built and harnessed to control labor and resources, created the cities. Yet the cities also made the state, resulting in a feedback loop between state, city and the growth of the increasingly powerful cities of mesopotamia.
