In 1980, logging companies begin salvaging trees from the blowdown zone of Mount St. Helens. Conservationists did not like this plant because they knew it would make it harder to protect the land. The plan calls for a 216,000 acre monument that will protect everything of geological, scenic, recreational, and ecological interests around the mountain. In August 1992, President Reagan signs into law an act creatingMount St. Helen National Volcanic Monument.
