Students at the conference asked panelists about what I've been talking about. It reveals a problem with the term itself, says Julian Zelizer. The theory that bad actors are seeking to pollute our information ecosystem suffers from a similar hubris as the one that blinded ideologues and apparats of the evil empire. But is that really true? Do people believe everything they read on Facebook or Twitter? Of course not.
