Is There a Scientific Culture?
John Dewey is an important character in the story, I think is a nice kind of symbol of that optimism of that time. John B. Watson's behaviorism and his at least operational denial of concepts like soul and mind. Bertrand Russell was also a notorious atheist; one of these sort of flash points around which this controversy revolves. But there's a tremendous amount of optimism behind all of these programs in the 1920s.
