The Importance of Embracing Depression
Ari was diagnosed with depression at the age of 11. She says she didn't know what getting better meant, but doctors told her to get better. After two weeks on an anti-depressant, Ari started having suicidal thoughts. Now there's black box labels on antidepressants for children that put kids under a certain age at more risk for suicidal ideation or thoughts. But at the time, that wasn't common knowledge. Her mother took her to emergency room where they were evaluated and found out it was likely the medication. A few years later, when Ari needed crisis level intervention after a breakup, she went to this center instead of hospital.
