Joyce famously said, if ulysses isn't fit to be read, then nobody else's done it. So where dublines was trying to bring dublin out into current times, maybe portrait of an artist is taking a look at ireland as a whole and n conat bigger perspective. A wants to look at just the every day, that there is art in the every day. And he wanted to transform the daily bread of everyday life into something but a permanent, artistic life of its own.
In this episode, we chat with Loic Wright on Irish novelist, short story writer, poet, and literary critic James Joyce, author of Ulysses and Finnegans Wake.
Loic is a PhD candidate in 20th century Irish fiction and culture and an Irish Research Council Scholar, formerly of the James Joyce Center.
