Is Socrates a Man?

For the most basic of all kinds of logic, when you put p and cue together, logically, p and cu as a statement. But if it's the case that something like p is a statement, and a particular instantiation of it, socrates is a man, is also a statement, well then we've got something confusing going on. We need to have a way of distinguishing between p and c and the things they represent or could be substituted for them in logic. i personally prefer the convention where p an c are called propositions, and then any string of them remains a proposition as wellprposition s are things that have truth value.
