What's Wrong With Nonprofits?
In the 60s, there was a huge pivotal time for nonprofits because it's the first time that really nonprofits are explicitly receiving government funding. The Ford Foundation had this idea that what's wrong with our institutions is that they don't understand the problems of the poor. And so then to your question of what makes that different than a membership organization, the reality of what nonprofits are right now is that there are groups of people who are preselected and have a say in how we're going to solve them.
