I think we have a hugely enlarged conceptual repertory today compared with the ancient Greeks. That doesn't mean that they weren't wise, but I think it does mean that it was harder for them to work these things out. And if you look at Plato's dialogues, for instance, often what I see there strikes me as heroic attempts to think about topics that Plato and his interlocutors don't have the terms for.
