From 18 74 to 18 77, when leopold' like a decade or so into his kinghood, there's this explorer, henry morton stanley. He completes a seven thousand mile expedition across central africa. Much of his travels centered upon the still undiscovered by white people, congo. Stanley had been bullish on the idea that the congo would be place for a colony and he wanted the british to set up a colony there.
