What Influences Our Choices?
Eric Kimbroke: I've been talking to one of my colleagues a lot about this lately, and he's sort of troubled by the way in which economists make causality one-sided. He says that when you think about norms in the language of economics, often the norm causes people to do something. So what I want people to take away is that normative goals are sort of natural objects and the choices of people. People consider what they want to do and what they ought to do. And both of those things shape their choices equally.
