The Marriage of Figaro and the Marriage of Mozart

The overture to The Marriage of Figaro was written at the same time as Mozart's 23rd and 24th piano concerti. Some scholars have posited that Mozart needed an outlet for dark and minor key music because of the relentless hilarity and hijinks of the opera. It is scored for a symphonic-sized orchestra, a flute to oboe's two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets and timpani,. plus strings. A few other unusual things about this first movement are harmony, rhythm and form.
