Joanna Moncrief is a professor of psychiatry at University College London. She says the greatest advance we could have would be to stop thinking of depression as a medical condition. Poverty, ill health, unemployment and bereavement all considerably raise the risk of depression - but these powerful determinants are sometimes glossed over.
