If you stop meditating, and this i know from personal experience, you start regressing. We found in strong hints that you make more progress on a retreat than you do during a daily practice. So i think that your analogy works both ways, for better and for worse. That daily practice is good for maintaining what you've done, but you'll make more progress, generally, if you do a more intensive stint of it as on a retreat.
