Many pioneers had this hope that computers would liberate people and power workers, increase the voice of citizens. That's not the direction in which corporations and the tech community pushed these technologies. It happened during a time where corporations became much more focused on improving shareholder value rather than creating an environment for worker training or skills development. This was also at the same time as worker voice was declining because the union movement,. both because of its own faults and because of other factors was declining.
