The Different Types of Working Memory
The term short-term memory is still used for situations where you simply hold and repeat or hold and write down a temporary message. Working memory on the other hand involves doing something with the material that you're holding. So if I asked you to multiply 27 by 3, you'd need to use working memory because you'd probably multiply the 3 by 7 is 21. And similarly with visual spatial memory, if you have a task like instructing a friend how to get to the station, you need not only to hold the way to the station in mind, but also pick off information in the appropriate order.
