The Pros and Cons of Presence Detection

There's a whole bunch of types of presence detection that you can do with varying pros and cons. One of the big problems is, how far do I go with this? Where do I draw the line? So in terms of how much information am I providing the system then how can I make an intelligent decision to try and do what I want to do?
