Mendelssohn's Second Theme in a Sonata Form
mendelson takes yet another departure from convention in this first movement and writes a third theme in his exposition. He does omething quite traditional and slows down this theme to bring out its lamenting qualitybut shae goes straight ahead. It's a completely different feeling. The music is now infused with anxiety and breathlessnessyou might prefer one or the other, but you should know that mendelssohn doesn't give any indication he wants a slower tempo here.
