Identity Politics - What Are They?

The term identity politics comes from the Kumbay River Collective which was a group of black feminists socialists queer black women who were socialists. They came up with this way of thinking and way of articulating their politics back in the late 70s. In general there's people who have taken the idea of working on identity based issues to mean well what you should be up to is working with people like you. I don't think that's a necessary part of identity politics or politics in general so I would be against that  I guess.
