What Does Midnight Mean?
midnight represents something occurring that ends civilization as we know it. There's a possibility, in a world wide thermo nuclear war, if all the weapons were used, that could literally exterminate humanity. That isn't necessary to be considered an apocalypse any even a much lower use of nuclear weapons could create a situation that sort of ends civilization. If we don't get a grip on climate change, the end result would be a world in which nobody who lives in the current world would want to live. It would be the end of our current civilization.
