The Fall of Magellan in the Canary Islands
Both Cartagena and his fellow plotter, the priest Rina, will be left on an island off the coast of Argentina. Neither will be heard from again. With this mutiny out of the way, the men of the Armada de Maluca prepared their winter quarters. They also set out to gather food and supplies, as well as repair the ships. It was here that Magellan found that many of the provisions provided in the Canary Islands were worthless. He basically had only a third of what he thought he had purchased. Fortunately, the local Tuelchi natives became friendly with the fleet. The Europeans called them Pathegoni, a name which survives to this day -
