Philadelphia's Yellow Fever Crisis
The final days of a blistering hot August in 1793 claimed more lives in Philadelphia. The city government was breaking down Judges, Alderman and Clurik stopped showing up for work Some were sick themselves, but more often they had fled the city Clarkson was left without anyone to carry out his orders or advise him And it wasn't just City Hall facing a labor shortage Constables, nurses, bankers and drivers disappeared There were few workers on hand to clean the streets or dig graves for victims.
