The Importance of Catholic Communities in the Great Depression
Northern cities before World War II were almost all made up of these organized ethnic neighborhoods. The Catholic League of Decency was able to put hard limits on sex and violence in the movies for so long. Now, you know, there are still people who drive in from the old neighborhood to go to the old church that their grandfathers build. But it's not, it's not the same. It's a place to go to church on Sunday mornings. They're driving past crack houses and there's trash everywhere and things are run down. You can't build a real community out in the suburbs anymore.
