There's a tendency in us to look back to the past and say there are certain tried and true rules which people have followed for centuries. Just so long as it isn't made an absolute truth then it becomes dangerous, he says. The parallel between ethics and language is that if a language is dead like Latin it tends not to invent any new words. But on the whole the theological debates in Latin utterly resist new words.
