The End of Capitalism in the United States
Karl Marx didn't realize the extent to which the United States was absorbing all the social contradiction of European capitalism. He'd always assumed that it would be interrupted before that could occur by the internal contradictions of capitalism undermining it, he says. Those not contradictions were not felt the same way in the U.S., where they marshal a continent's worth of resources and therefore able to take on Europe because of their relatively similar economic power.
