Alaric and the Battle of Verona

Alaric was defeated by Stilico at the battle of Verona in 402. The barbarian king took off for the Alps, but decided to stop and make camp near Verona instead. There are a few different theories about why Alaric stopped - he wanted to regain his honor or cut a better deal with the Western court. Whatever the reason, it turned out to be probably the worst defeat in Alaric's long and illustrious career.
