The History of the Overseas Colony
Before the Transcontinental Railroad, California was effectively an overseas colony. The capitalists who are building up this overseas colony more or less are relatively like petty grocery guys. Leland Stanford as a sort of luckless goon is that you know the head guy of the Republican Party on the west coast until the Civil War breaks out and then suddenly he's like Lincoln's trusted west coast advisor. He goes very quickly from being a petty capitalist to being the face of capital on the West Coast. And so it's like it reminded me of deadwood you know how like the sheriff is he's doing a hardware store with his partner right like well he's really that that was the petty capitalist of the West
