The Moral Accounting Metaphor
A lot of our discourse revolves around a handful of central metaphors. One of those metaphors in the moral domain is this accounting metaphor. The thought seems to be that if somebody benefits you in some marked or extraordinary way, then you have them, they've paid you something. But there isn't necessarily anything wrong with thinking in these terms, but it's clear that this has some possible dangers.
