If Statements Are Free, Right?

An if statement is fairly, it's free, right? It does give you some lines of code, but you can comment that sucker. So they say if and then a parentheses, exclamation point and then to two conditionals parentheses. And inside of that two conditionals within and between them, instead of if not foo or not bar, both of those stink for me. What I end up doing, I end up just doing nested if statements at that point. Oh, that's so much more readable.
