It's just a cute phrase. In a cute way, right? Comparing yourself to a dog barking up a tree. Like I was barking up the wrong tree when I asked my boss for time off next week and should have gone straight to HR or whatever. It'd be a great way to hit a more informal tone on your general task one letter. But even thinking about it for speaking part three, it feels like it would be really informal to start talking about how someone's Barking Up The Wrong Tree because it feels so playful.
