The Apocalypse in Modernity
I think we've covered a lot of the things that are really central to the book. But I do say at one point that I see modernity itself as a kind of apocalyptic project. The wars of religion or the colonization of the new world were driven by apocalyptic fantasies in which people genuinely saw their enemies as diabolical. So the beautiful ending does carry with it some quite horrific things in its wake. And so I would like to stress that and that I think it's interesting to think about the modern.
