The US has about 800 military personnel in Niger and Blinken's visit was the first time that a US Secretary of State had visited Niger. France still maintains significant economic control over multiple countries in West Africa through imposing the so-called CFA frunk. This is a neo colonial device that continues to destroy any prospect of economic development in user nations.
