How Do You Respond to the Needs and Desires of a Baby?

Most people have this view of babies, say, as just being unreasonable. They're not paying attention to the signals that the baby is giving. And then parents do things like force the child to learn to sleep through through the night by ignoring her cries. The problem with that is number one, you're teaching the baby that the baby can't have an effect on the world. But also, as I say, you are causing this conflict-ridden relationship to be created. Whereas if you're taking your children seriously it doesn't happen because you're never getting to where it's that kind of a problem. You're actually responding positively at a much earlier stage.
