The first glimpses of Christian monasticism began in the 4th century in Egypt. Monks look to St. Paul also as a model of the monastic life, especially for nuns. The four daughters of the apostle Philip were dedicated in virginity and they were prophets. So there's many other biblical examples of this kind of way of life.
