It's still an open question as to whether this kind of thing could happen in a real market with all its additional complexity. The concept of automated collusion raises all sorts of legal questions. These self-learning algorithms don't have understanding much less mutual understanding, which is really what's required in the context of the law. For now, there's no one in charge of monitoring if these systems are playing by rules we deem fair.
