Nancy Pelosi's trip from some weeks ago to Taiwan made this a more fraught meeting between the president and Xi. I think it was good for the United States because in a sense, it kind of forced the Chinese to recognize the scale of the opposition that they were going to encounter in Washington. You can't possibly be too tough on China with your Democrat or Republican. To the extent that these folks were engaging in tough on China policies, they were sort of politics free.
