During the late 90s, Amazon and Bezos went on a buying frenzy as they purchased a number of companies to try and continually build out their competitive moat. eBay was unique because the individuals were the sellers in an auction style on their site. This led Amazon to eventually release third-party sellers to allow individuals to start selling on Amazon but at a fixed price rather than the auction style format.
