Is Peer Review Really Preventing Bad Science?

The big scandal that links to this was the Alzheimer's amyloid plaque hypothesis. And from my kind of understanding, it was basically that we've for decades not already had a lot of progress in Alzheimer's prevention or treatment. It seemed like the fundamental building blocks of what we believed causes Alzheimer's and build up a plaque. Like those original studies had been the data to be fabricated.
