The Importance of Offering Up
Suffering is a result of the fall in the sense that there wouldn't be this kind of suffering if this was a perfect world. We offer up not the negativity of it, but rather our attitude towards it. The Catholic notion of Christ's atonement is not so much about the fact that his suffering and qua suffering redeemed the world, but his love and obedience to the suffering,. It was his love that actually merited the treasury of God's mercy. And therefore our suffering, not qua suffering, you know, like, Oh, I'm going to, I'll just add this extra pain.
