The Essence of Sin Is Trust

This story is mythological in genre. It's basically Genesis chapter three on repeat over and over again until you get to Jesus. Because of its archetypal nature, which is pretty obvious when you read the story, this story is where theologians get the language of original sin even though that word sin isn't used until a chapter or two later. And the key insight for the attentive reader of the story is this, the essence of sin is trust. Nobody sins out of duty or discipline. We sin because we believe a lie. As God really said, you shall be like gods.
