The Anger of the Lord Was Kindled Against Israel

The Lord incited David against the people saying go number Israel and Judah. We don't know for sure when this happened, but we can say that it happened after David was king of course. So I think the real question is, why would David do this? And there's no clear answer given. The Old Testament typically refers to God as the one who does these things.
