Climbing Plants - What Is Thigmatropism?

Climbing plants produce structures called tendrils, which are sort of growths out of the stem. They trigger a response called thigmatropism when they touch something. This triggers a whole cascade of reactions that enables them to curl around the stem and give it support so it can climb up higher. The young tendrils whirl around, looking for a support, and then when they touch their support, one end of the tendril will coil clockwise and the other will coil counterclockwise. If you look at any of the passion flowers in your garden, you'll be able to see this happening.
